In 2022, approx. X tons of articles of asbestos-cement, cellulose fiber-cement or the like were exported in ASEAN; remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, articles of fiber cement exports amounted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +72.1% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Thailand dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2022. Indonesia (X tons) took an 8.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (5.5%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to articles of fiber cement exports from Thailand stood at +11.7%. At the same time, Indonesia (+27.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +27.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-11.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+26 p.p.) and Indonesia (+6.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-32.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest articles of fiber cement supplier in ASEAN, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Thailand, articles of fiber cement exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+29.0% per year) and Malaysia (-12.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in supplies from abroad of articles of asbestos-cement, cellulose fiber-cement or the like, which increased by 31% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, articles of fiber cement imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 47%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The Philippines was the key importer of articles of asbestos-cement, cellulose fiber-cement or the like in ASEAN, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 71% of total imports in 2022. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Myanmar (5.7%) and Malaysia (5.5%). The following importers - Cambodia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to articles of fiber cement imports into the Philippines stood at +18.3%. At the same time, Myanmar (+30.4%) and Malaysia (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lao People's Democratic Republic (-2.5%), Indonesia (-5.3%) and Cambodia (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+71 p.p.) and Myanmar (+4.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic saw its share reduced by -3.9%, -7.8%, -14.2% and -33.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported articles of asbestos-cement, cellulose fiber-cement or the like in ASEAN, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Philippines amounted to +16.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+7.3% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (-5.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 9.1% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
