Avocado Market Size in ASEAN
After five years of growth, the ASEAN avocado market decreased by -1.7% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, recorded resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Avocado Production in ASEAN
In value terms, avocado production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 118% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of avocado production was Indonesia (X tons), comprising approx. 75% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Vietnam (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Indonesia stood at +8.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+136.6% per year) and the Philippines (-0.5% per year).
In 2022, the average avocado yield in ASEAN fell modestly to X tons per ha, leveling off at 2021. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 20%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the avocado harvested area in ASEAN dropped to X ha, which is down by -5.7% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 60%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Avocado Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, the amount of avocados exported in ASEAN fell rapidly to X tons, reducing by -26.8% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 389% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, avocado exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 135%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The Philippines (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together achieving a 37% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +55.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X) emerged as the largest avocado supplier in ASEAN, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Philippines totaled +61.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+20.5% per year) and Myanmar (+48.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 89% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 152%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Avocado Imports
Imports in ASEAN
After ten years of growth, supplies from abroad of avocados decreased by -12.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 53%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, avocado imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented the major importers of avocados in 2022, amounting to approx. 46% and 33% of total imports, respectively. Thailand (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Brunei Darussalam (X tons). All these countries together took near 20% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Brunei Darussalam (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest avocado importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 96% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +24.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 12%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
