In 2021, overseas shipments of barbed wire and entanglements increased by 58% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barbed wire exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), creating a 28% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the barbed wire and entanglements exports, with a CAGR of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021. Indonesia (-1.4%) and Vietnam (-20.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+28 p.p.) and Indonesia (+4.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -13.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 98% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +4.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of barbed wire and entanglements increased by 7.3% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +51.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 60%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, barbed wire imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) represented the key importer of barbed wire and entanglements, achieving 47% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons). All these countries together held near 47% share of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +19.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+29.1%), Thailand (+25.7%), Myanmar (+19.2%) and Malaysia (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +29.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-11.4%) and Indonesia (-15.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+29 p.p.), Thailand (+16 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+7.3 p.p.) and Myanmar (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Indonesia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -18.8% and -27% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest barbed wire importing markets in ASEAN were the Philippines ($X), Thailand ($X) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), together accounting for 70% of total imports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +27.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
