Barley Market Size in ASEAN

After five years of growth, the ASEAN barley market decreased by -9.8% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Barley Production in ASEAN

In value terms, barley production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 722%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of barley production was Thailand (X tons), comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.

In Thailand, barley production increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average barley yield shrank slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 2% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of barley were harvested in ASEAN; waning by -1.9% compared with the previous year. The total harvested area indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley harvested area increased by +34.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to barley production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Barley Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of barley decreased by -25.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 332% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barley exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 325%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Philippines prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.9% share, followed by Singapore (5.3%). The following exporters - Malaysia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - each finished at a 4.5% share of total exports.

The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the barley exports, with a CAGR of +765.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+18.1%) and Indonesia (+17.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Philippines increased by +81 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 93% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +73.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -18.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 225%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Barley Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of barley, when their volume decreased by -12.6% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, barley imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) represented the largest importer of barley, generating 53% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by the Philippines (20%).

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the barley imports, with a CAGR of +71.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+57.9%) and Vietnam (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Thailand (+51 p.p.) and the Philippines (+18 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-18.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 98% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +60.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
