Beer Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN beer market fell modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Beer Production in ASEAN

In value terms, beer production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of beer increased by 5.5% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beer exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 39% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together making up a 55% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +10.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest beer supplying countries in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising 89% of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +6.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Beer Imports

Imports in ASEAN

For the fourth consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in supplies from abroad of beer, which decreased by -40.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beer imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 29%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 54% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Malaysia (14%) and Cambodia (6.1%). Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Singapore decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cambodia (+17.3%), the Philippines (+16.1%), Thailand (+8.7%), Vietnam (+7.4%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines increased by +24, +13, +5.5, +2.9 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beer in ASEAN, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+12.8% per year) and Malaysia (-13.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 51% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
