For the third year in a row, the ASEAN coloured pencil lead market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -13.6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a abrupt slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coloured pencil lead production shrank sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 251% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, shipments abroad of black or coloured pencil leads increased by 8.5% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports saw a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coloured pencil lead exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +48.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 42%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Philippines represented the key exporter of black or coloured pencil leads in ASEAN, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was near 43% of total exports in 2021. Indonesia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 28% share, followed by Vietnam (26%). Malaysia (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest coloured pencil lead supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +20.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 7% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, coloured pencil lead export price decreased by -8.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 67%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

For the third year in a row, ASEAN recorded decline in purchases abroad of black or coloured pencil leads, which decreased by -15.7% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coloured pencil lead imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the main importing country with an import of about X units, which amounted to 65% of total imports. Indonesia (X units) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (5.5%). The following importers - Myanmar (X units) and the Philippines (X units) - together made up 7% of total imports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the black or coloured pencil leads imports, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Philippines (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Myanmar (-3.8%) and Indonesia (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+34 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Indonesia saw its share reduced by -19.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported black or coloured pencil leads in ASEAN, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam stood at +4.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-13.4% per year) and Malaysia (-9.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
