Bottled Water Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN bottled water market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -3.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +4.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Bottled Water Production in ASEAN

In value terms, bottled water production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +4.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Bottled Water Exports

Exports in ASEAN

For the fifth consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in overseas shipments of bottled waters, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bottled water exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +51.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together creating a 46% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +27.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest bottled water supplier in ASEAN, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand amounted to +15.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (-3.1% per year) and Indonesia (+13.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 44%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Bottled Water Imports

Imports in ASEAN

Bottled water imports reached X tons in 2022, rising by 8.7% compared with 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +16.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +41.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Cambodia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of bottled waters. At the same time, the Philippines (+43.7%), Vietnam (+26.5%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+24.1%), Malaysia (+13.9%) and Cambodia (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +43.7% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of the Philippines (+14 p.p.), Vietnam (+2.8 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.5 p.p.) and Malaysia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-19.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bottled waters in ASEAN, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 10% share.

In Singapore, bottled water imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (+32.9% per year) and Thailand (+1.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
