In 2021, the ASEAN market for bottles, jars and other containers of glass decreased by -30.8% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container production shrank sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 145%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, shipments abroad of bottles, jars and other containers of glass was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X units) represented the main exporter of bottles, jars and other containers of glass, making up 48% of total exports. Indonesia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Malaysia (13%), Vietnam (9.5%) and the Philippines (7.1%). Singapore (X units) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +7.2% from 2012-2021. The Philippines experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-6.8%), Indonesia (-7.1%) and Malaysia (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+21 p.p.) and Vietnam (+5.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -10.2% and -16.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest glass bottle, jar and container supplying countries in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, the Philippines and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +13.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Indonesia ($X per unit) and Singapore ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) and Malaysia ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

Glass bottle, jar and container imports contracted slightly to X units in 2021, stabilizing at 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 61%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Indonesia (X units), Myanmar (X units), the Philippines (X units), Vietnam (X units), Thailand (X units) and Malaysia (X units) represented the key importer of bottles, jars and other containers of glass in ASEAN, comprising 86% of total import. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X units), making up a 5.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 55% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 41%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while Myanmar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
