Brewing Dregs Market Size in ASEAN

In 2022, the ASEAN brewing dregs market decreased by -7.8% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, brewing dregs production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 19%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, exports of brewing or distilling dregs and waste in ASEAN stood at X tons, increasing by 14% on the year before. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 38%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, brewing dregs exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) represented the major exporter of brewing or distilling dregs and waste, creating 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), comprising a 14% share of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -5.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+45.2%) and the Philippines (+19.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +45.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Lao People's Democratic Republic increased by +4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest brewing dregs supplier in ASEAN, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+1.9% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+40.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -10.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, brewing dregs export price decreased by -16.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, approx. X tons of brewing or distilling dregs and waste were imported in ASEAN; waning by -18.1% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brewing dregs imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) represented the key importer of brewing or distilling dregs and waste, creating 54% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 40% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 88% of total imports. The Philippines, Cambodia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +18.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
