In 2021, the amount of butene (butylene) and isomers thereof exported in ASEAN totaled X tons, leveling off at the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, butene and isomers thereof exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 77%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Indonesia represented the major exporter of butene (butylene) and isomers thereof in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - together made up 5% of total exports.
Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +14.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Singapore (+65.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +65.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-26.1%) and Thailand (-26.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+79 p.p.) and Singapore (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -37.4% and -57.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest butene and isomers thereof supplier in ASEAN, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia stood at +9.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+70.2% per year) and Thailand (-29.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Butene (Butylene) And Isomers Thereof
Imports in ASEAN
Butene and isomers thereof imports fell rapidly to X tons in 2021, reducing by -17.8% against 2020. In general, imports, however, saw modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 167% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, butene and isomers thereof imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 139%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Singapore represented the largest importer of butene (butylene) and isomers thereof in ASEAN, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 50% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (8.5%), Malaysia (7.7%) and Indonesia (7.4%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +40.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest butene and isomers thereof importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports.
The Philippines, with a CAGR of +35.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 32% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Philippines ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (-3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
