Cabbage Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN cabbage market fell modestly to $X in 2022, dropping by -1.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Cabbage Production in ASEAN

In value terms, cabbage production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 26%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), with a combined 91% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +1.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of cabbage and other brassicas in ASEAN dropped slightly to X tons per ha, approximately equating 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 6.5%. Over the period under review, the cabbage yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of cabbage and other brassicas in ASEAN stood at X ha, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cabbage production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cabbage Exports

Exports in ASEAN

After four years of growth, shipments abroad of cabbage and other brassicas decreased by -13% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 61%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, cabbage exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Lao People's Democratic Republic represented the major exporter of cabbage and other brassicas in ASEAN, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 43% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together mixing up a 57% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage exports from Lao People's Democratic Republic stood at +22.4%. At the same time, Myanmar (+45.3%), Thailand (+17.7%), Vietnam (+10.3%) and Malaysia (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +45.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-17.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand increased by +35, +11, +8.1 and +4.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cabbage supplying countries in ASEAN were Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 82% share of total exports. Myanmar, Indonesia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +36.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cabbage Imports

Imports in ASEAN

Cabbage imports totaled X tons in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +28.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, cabbage imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +4.9% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total imports in 2022. Singapore (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Vietnam (6.1%). Brunei Darussalam (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Brunei Darussalam (with a CAGR of +15.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cabbage importing markets in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports. Vietnam and Brunei Darussalam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Among the main importing countries, Brunei Darussalam, with a CAGR of +11.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
