Canned Food Market Size in ASEAN
The ASEAN canned food market stood at $X in 2021, rising by 2.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. In value terms, canned food production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -2.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 29%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Canned Food Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, shipments abroad of canned food was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned food exports stood at $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 4.5%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 61% of total exports. The Philippines (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Indonesia (12%), Vietnam (5%) and Singapore (4.9%). Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of canned food. At the same time, Indonesia (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2012-2021. Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-3.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest canned food supplier in ASEAN, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 7.6% share.
In Thailand, canned food exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-0.9% per year) and the Philippines (+4.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Canned Food Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of canned food imported in ASEAN stood at X tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, canned food imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Malaysia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total imports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.7% share, followed by Thailand (6.4%). Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned food importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 38%.
Cambodia, with a CAGR of +18.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
