In 2021, the amount of carbon brushes exported in ASEAN shrank remarkably to X tons, with a decrease of -16.8% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 28%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbon brush exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together achieving a 14% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malaysia (+8.4%), the Philippines (+8.3%) and Vietnam (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012-2021. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Thailand (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -3.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest carbon brush supplier in ASEAN, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 7.8% share.

In Thailand, carbon brush exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+6.5% per year) and Singapore (+3.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -13.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 9.6%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of carbon brushes decreased by -6.7% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -29.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbon brush imports shrank to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -20.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented roughly 76% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Indonesia (7.7%). Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carbon brush importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 71% of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+15.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
