Trailer And Semi-Trailer Market Size in ASEAN

After two years of growth, the ASEAN trailer and semi-trailer market decreased by -1.3% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Production in ASEAN

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 16%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, approx. X units of cargo trailers and semi-trailers were exported in ASEAN; dropping by -28.9% compared with 2021. In general, exports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 173%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 474%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X units), Thailand (X units) and Indonesia (X units) represented roughly 77% of total exports in 2022. Malaysia (X units) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (8.6%). Cambodia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Among the main exporting countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +16.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 110%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, supplies from abroad of cargo trailers and semi-trailers decreased by -15.1% to X units, falling for the seventh consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, namely Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, represented more than half of total import. Thailand (X units) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (7.9%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (7.2%) and Malaysia (6.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +14.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cargo trailers and semi-trailers in ASEAN, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 10% share.

In Vietnam, trailer and semi-trailer imports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-1.5% per year) and Thailand (+9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, declining by -2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 70%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
