Carob Market Size in ASEAN

For the fifth year in a row, the ASEAN carob market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -88.8% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption recorded a dramatic descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Carob Production in ASEAN

In value terms, carob production shrank dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 880%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Thailand (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of carob production, accounting for 90% of total volume. Moreover, carob production in Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Singapore (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Philippines (X tons), with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Thailand stood at -50.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Singapore (+0.9% per year) and the Philippines (-30.3% per year).

Carob Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of carob, when their volume increased by 19% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 275%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carob exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 235%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) was the main exporter of carob in ASEAN, comprising 99% of total export.

Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carob exports, with a CAGR of +32.9% from 2012 to 2021. Malaysia (+95 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) also remains the largest carob supplier in ASEAN.

In Malaysia, carob exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 170%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Malaysia.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Malaysia amounted to -7.5% per year.

Carob Imports

Imports in ASEAN

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of carob decreased by -83.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a dramatic setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carob imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 48%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) dominates imports structure, together achieving 76% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together mixing up a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Malaysia (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - each recorded an 8.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Malaysia (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 84% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 28% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
