Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented roughly 70% of total exports in 2021. Singapore (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the Philippines (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +36.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 80% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +42.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X tons of cationic surface-active agents (excluding soap) were imported in ASEAN; surging by 4.1% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, cationic surface-active agents (excl. soap) imports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Indonesia represented the main importer of cationic surface-active agents (excluding soap) in ASEAN, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (16%) and Thailand (12%). The following importers - Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each resulted at a 7.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cationic surface-active agents (excl. soap) imports into Indonesia stood at +6.9%. At the same time, the Philippines (+19.8%) and Malaysia (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +19.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-3.6%), Vietnam (-4.5%) and Thailand (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+17 p.p.), the Philippines (+12 p.p.) and Malaysia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-2.4 p.p.), Vietnam (-12.3 p.p.) and Thailand (-17.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
