In 2021, shipments abroad of caustic soda decreased by -29.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 72%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), generating a 9.5% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +5.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Singapore, which accounted for a further 4.3%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Singapore, with a CAGR of +3.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, caustic soda imports in ASEAN contracted slightly to X tons, waning by -2.2% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda imports declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of caustic soda imports in 2021 were Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together recording 68% of total import. The Philippines (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Thailand (11%) and Singapore (7.4%). Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 68% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +14.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
