The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+0.8%).

In 2021, the amount of caviar (sturgeon) imported in ASEAN soared to X tons, rising by 96% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, caviar (sturgeon) imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +71.0% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Singapore represented the largest importer of caviar (sturgeon) in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 74% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (12%).

Imports into Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malaysia (+23.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +23.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-28.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+61 p.p.) and Malaysia (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -74.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported caviar (sturgeon) in ASEAN, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore amounted to +13.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (-9.5% per year) and Malaysia (+22.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -27.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 131% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+25.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
