Cereal Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN cereal market declined slightly to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Cereal Production in ASEAN

In value terms, cereal production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production. Myanmar, the Philippines, Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

In 2022, the average yield of cereals in ASEAN shrank modestly to X tons per ha, stabilizing at 2021. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by X%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the cereal yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cereal harvested area totaled X ha in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cereal production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of cereals increased by X% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cereal exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) represented the main exporter of cereals, generating X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cereal exports from Myanmar stood at X%. At the same time, Vietnam (X%) and Indonesia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X%) and Thailand (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (X p.p.), Vietnam (X p.p.) and Indonesia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand and Lao People's Democratic Republic saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest cereal supplier in ASEAN, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an X% share.

In Myanmar, cereal exports expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (X% per year) and Vietnam (X% per year).

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cereal export price increased by X% against 2017 indices. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
