For the fifth year in a row, the ASEAN dissolving grade wood pulp market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -16% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fifth year in a row, ASEAN recorded growth in shipments abroad of dissolving grade wood pulp, which increased by 24% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 349%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 227%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Indonesia was the main exporter of dissolving grade wood pulp in ASEAN, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic (14%) and Thailand (4.7%).

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dissolving grade wood pulp exports, with a CAGR of +123.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+49.5%), Malaysia (+37.9%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+34.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Indonesia and Malaysia increased by +53 and +25 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest dissolving grade wood pulp supplier in ASEAN, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia totaled +115.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+29.6% per year) and Malaysia (-4.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of dissolving grade wood pulp increased by 45% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) was the main importer of dissolving grade wood pulp, making up 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together constituting a 43% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of dissolving grade wood pulp. At the same time, Malaysia (+93.7%), Singapore (+29.8%) and Thailand (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +93.7% from 2012-2021. Malaysia (+24 p.p.) and Singapore (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -5.7% and -21.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
