Chicken Meat Market Size in ASEAN
The ASEAN chicken meat market shrank slightly to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Chicken Meat Production in ASEAN
In value terms, chicken meat production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of chicken meat production was Indonesia (X tons), comprising approx. 35% of total volume. Moreover, chicken meat production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), twofold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Indonesia totaled +9.2%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Thailand (+1.6% per year) and Malaysia (+2.7% per year).
In 2021, the average chicken meat yield in ASEAN rose to X kg per head, surging by 3.6% on the year before. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 5.4%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in ASEAN reached X heads, approximately equating 2020 figures. The total number of producing animals indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production decreased by -4.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the number of producing animals increased by 24%. Over the period under review, this number attained the peak level at X heads in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, producing animals remained at a lower figure.
Chicken Meat Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, approx. X tons of chicken meat were exported in ASEAN; increasing by 9.6% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat exports reached $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 63%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Thailand dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), mixing up an 8.5% share of total exports. The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chicken meat exports from Thailand stood at +16.2%. At the same time, Vietnam (+45.2%) and Singapore (+15.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +45.2% from 2012-2021. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Thailand (+9.4 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest chicken meat supplier in ASEAN, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 6.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand amounted to +18.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+14.8% per year) and Vietnam (+47.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Chicken Meat Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, chicken meat imports in ASEAN contracted to X tons, remaining constant against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Philippines (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented roughly 69% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together creating a 26% share of total imports. The following importers - Cambodia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - each reached a 3.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +62.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Cambodia and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 19%.
Among the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +53.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
