The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the chili and pepper yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. In 2022, approx. X tons of chilies and peppers (green) were exported in ASEAN; almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Thailand (X tons), distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Cambodia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented the major exporters of chilies and peppers (green), together achieving 99% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +67.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chili and pepper supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Myanmar ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports. Cambodia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

For the eleventh year in a row, ASEAN recorded growth in overseas purchases of chilies and peppers (green), which increased by 4.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together comprising 86% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), achieving a 9.5% share of total imports. Brunei Darussalam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +50.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chili and pepper importing markets in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +56.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
