Chlorides Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was decline in the ASEAN chlorides market, when its value decreased by -2.4% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Chlorides Production in ASEAN

In value terms, chlorides production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X tons of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) were exported in ASEAN; falling by -13.8% against 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides exports shrank to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), namely Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), making up a 13% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +26.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 72% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +23.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chlorides Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), when their volume decreased by -1.9% to X tons. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +57.3% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, chlorides imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented roughly 95% of total imports in 2021. Cambodia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +20.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 58% share of total imports. Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +20.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
