The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery exports stood at $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented the main exporters of chocolate and confectionery in ASEAN, together reaching approx. 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), mixing up a 23% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +4.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chocolate and confectionery supplying countries in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Singapore ($X), together comprising 97% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +6.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, approx. X tons of chocolate and confectionery were imported in ASEAN; dropping by -6.9% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The purchases of the five major importers of chocolate and confectionery, namely the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Vietnam (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +14.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
