In 2022, the ASEAN cigarettes containing tobacco market increased by 2.2% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after eight years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Cigarettes Containing Tobacco Production in ASEAN
In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 4.1%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Cigarettes Containing Tobacco Exports
Exports in ASEAN
For the fourth consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in overseas shipments of cigarettes containing tobacco, which decreased by -10.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 13%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) was the largest exporter of cigarettes containing tobacco, mixing up 51% of total exports. The Philippines (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together took near 42% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Indonesia stood at +2.7%. At the same time, the Philippines (+10.3%) and Thailand (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +10.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-1.9%) and Singapore (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+13 p.p.) and Indonesia (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-13.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Singapore ($X) and the Philippines ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 82% of total exports. Vietnam and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +15.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cigarettes Containing Tobacco Imports
Imports in ASEAN
For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in supplies from abroad of cigarettes containing tobacco, which decreased by -4.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 14%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Cambodia (X tons) was the main importer of cigarettes containing tobacco, generating 38% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Thailand (18%), Indonesia (11%) and Malaysia (9.6%). The following importers - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - each reached a 3.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +32.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Cambodia ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 77% of total imports. Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
Among the main importing countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +28.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 14%.
