Cigars And Cigarillos Market Size in ASEAN

In 2022, the ASEAN cigars and cigarillos market increased by 1.2% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Cigars And Cigarillos Production in ASEAN

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Cigars And Cigarillos Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos, when their volume decreased by -33.9% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2022. Myanmar (X tons) took a 7.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (5.2%).

Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+85.7%) and the Philippines (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +85.7% from 2012-2022. Myanmar (+7.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Indonesia saw its share reduced by -7.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest cigars and cigarillos supplier in ASEAN, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.

In Indonesia, cigars and cigarillos exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+11.1% per year) and Myanmar (+45.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 26% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cigars and cigarillos export price decreased by -22.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Cigars And Cigarillos Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, purchases abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 104%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) was the key importer of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos, committing 60% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Singapore (X tons). All these countries together took near 35% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cigars, cheroots and cigarillos imports, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Singapore (+5.5%), Malaysia (+4.5%) and Cambodia (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Thailand (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+38 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cambodia (-3.3 p.p.), Thailand (-5.9 p.p.), Singapore (-7.9 p.p.) and Malaysia (-19 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cigars, cheroots and cigarillos in ASEAN, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore totaled +5.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+21.1% per year) and Malaysia (-5.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -15.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
