Common Clay Market Size in ASEAN

In 2022, the ASEAN common clay market increased by 1.1% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Common Clay Production in ASEAN

In value terms, common clay production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Common Clay Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of common clay, when their volume decreased by -44.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 177% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, common clay exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +70.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Malaysia was the largest exporter of common clay in ASEAN, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), comprising a 33% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +9.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 100% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +9.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 46% against the previous year. Export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Common Clay Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, purchases abroad of common clay increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, common clay imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Indonesia represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 56% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (14%) and Thailand (11%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to common clay imports into Indonesia stood at +7.1%. At the same time, Vietnam (+10.6%) and Thailand (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+26 p.p.) and Vietnam (+9.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -20.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported common clay in ASEAN, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 10% share.

In Indonesia, common clay imports increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+3.2% per year) and Vietnam (+3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -17% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, common clay import price increased by +5.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 41%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
