Cobalt Market Size in ASEAN
The ASEAN cobalt market dropped sharply to $X in 2021, falling by -16% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded resilient growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Cobalt Production in ASEAN
In value terms, cobalt production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN
For the fifth consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in shipments abroad of cobalt, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 78%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, cobalt exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 241% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Singapore (X tons) was the major exporter of cobalt, committing 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), comprising a 33% share of total exports.
Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cobalt exports, with a CAGR of +46.7% from 2012 to 2021. Malaysia (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+62 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-34.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest cobalt supplier in ASEAN, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore stood at +50.4%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+2.5%).
Cobalt Imports
Imports in ASEAN
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of cobalt decreased by -47.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 348% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, cobalt imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) was the main importer of cobalt, constituting 80% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X tons). All these countries together held near 18% share of total imports.
Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cobalt imports, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Singapore (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Thailand (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia increased by +33 percentage points.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +9.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
