Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, colour lake exports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Singapore represented the largest exporter of colour lakes, preparations based on colour lakes in ASEAN, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 45% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Vietnam (13%), the Philippines (5.6%) and Indonesia (5%). Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +77.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest colour lake supplier in ASEAN, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with an 18% share.

In Singapore, colour lake exports decreased by an average annual rate of -7.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+50.0% per year) and Malaysia (+29.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -23.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, colour lake export price increased by +2.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 34%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, colour lake imports fell to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of colour lake imports in 2021 were Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together accounting for 71% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together generating a 28% share of total imports.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with an 18% share.

In Vietnam, colour lake imports increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-4.2% per year) and Thailand (-2.4% per year).
