Comb Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN comb market soared to $X in 2022, rising by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a perceptible decrease. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Comb Production in ASEAN

In value terms, comb production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Comb Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, shipments abroad of combs and hair-slides decreased by -27.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, comb exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) was the main exporter of combs and hair-slides, generating 75% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (5.9%). The following exporters - Indonesia (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - each recorded a 3.3% share of total exports.

Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of combs and hair-slides. At the same time, Cambodia (+59.4%) and Singapore (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +59.4% from 2012-2022. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+3 p.p.) and Cambodia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest comb supplier in ASEAN, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 6.3% share.

In Thailand, comb exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+0.0% per year) and Singapore (+2.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 18%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Comb Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, the amount of combs and hair-slides imported in ASEAN skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 22% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, comb imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 63%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Indonesia prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.3% share, followed by Vietnam (7.8%) and Myanmar (6.2%). Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to comb imports into Indonesia stood at +8.9%. At the same time, Myanmar (+30.3%), Vietnam (+18.1%), Malaysia (+17.2%) and Thailand (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +30.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Philippines (-23.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia and Thailand increased by +36, +6.1, +5.7, +3.3 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 73% of total imports. Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

Among the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +26.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 168%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+46.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
