The ASEAN composite paperboard market stood at $X in 2021, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 15%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of composite paper and paperboard exported in ASEAN dropped to X tons, declining by -8.9% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 55%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, composite paperboard exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of composite paper and paperboard, namely Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Indonesia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Singapore (6.5%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +26.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 70% share of total exports. Thailand and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +18.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Composite Paperboard Imports
Imports in ASEAN
Composite paperboard imports declined to X tons in 2021, falling by -10% compared with the previous year. In general, imports saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, composite paperboard imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of composite paperboard imports in 2021 were Vietnam (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together accounting for 88% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), generating a 5.3% share of total imports. The following importers - Singapore (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest composite paperboard importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together comprising 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 30%.
Cambodia, with a CAGR of +12.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
