Totaliser Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, the ASEAN totaliser market increased by 1,429% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption showed significant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Totaliser Production in ASEAN

In value terms, totaliser production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 299% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

Totaliser exports fell markedly to X units in 2021, waning by -54.3% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 56%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a dramatic shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 149% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Singapore was the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 61% of total exports. Indonesia (X units) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (7.4%) and Thailand (5.4%). Vietnam (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to totaliser exports from Singapore stood at -43.6%. At the same time, Indonesia (+48.0%) and Thailand (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +48.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.1%) and Vietnam (-17.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+23 p.p.), Malaysia (+7.3 p.p.), Thailand (+5.3 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-38.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest totaliser supplying countries in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 89% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +3.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -4.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 211%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Totaliser Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, supplies from abroad of continuous and discontinuous totalisers increased by 304% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, totaliser imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines represented the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which accounted for 83% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X units), committing a 16% share of total imports.

The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the continuous and discontinuous totalisers imports, with a CAGR of +53.9% from 2012 to 2021. Singapore (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Philippines increased by +80 percentage points.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported continuous and discontinuous totalisers in ASEAN, comprising 14% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.

In the Philippines, totaliser imports increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -76.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 109% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the Philippines stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+10.1%).
