Cotton Linters Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the ASEAN cotton linters market, when its value decreased by -41.2% to $X. In general, consumption showed a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Cotton Linters Production in ASEAN

In value terms, cotton linters production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 98%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of cotton linters, when their volume decreased by -52.5% to X tons. Overall, exports faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 278% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cotton linters exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 210% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) were the major exporters of cotton linters in ASEAN, together amounting to near 73% of total exports. Myanmar (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (9.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Myanmar ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 88% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, which accounted for a further 3.4%.

Among the main exporting countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +3.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 55% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+20.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cotton Linters Imports

Imports in ASEAN

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of cotton linters decreased by -71.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 275%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, cotton linters imports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 218% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Indonesia was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), constituting a 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total imports.

Imports into Indonesia decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+21.7%) and Singapore (+20.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-25.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+18 p.p.) and Singapore (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Indonesia (-6.9 p.p.) and Malaysia (-12.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cotton linters in ASEAN, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 2.3% share.

In Indonesia, cotton linters imports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+22.6% per year) and Singapore (+20.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 95% against the previous year. Import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
