Market Size for Crabs and Crab Meat in ASEAN

After two years of growth, the ASEAN crab and crab meat market decreased by -2.8% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Production of Crabs and Crab Meat in ASEAN

In value terms, crab and crab meat production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 76%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of crabs and crab meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crab and crab meat exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) were the main exporters of crabs and crab meat in 2021, accounting for approx. 30% and 29% of total exports, respectively. Malaysia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total exports. The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Myanmar ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 32%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +26.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Crabs and Crab Meat

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X tons of crabs and crab meat were imported in ASEAN; with an increase of 3.6% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 32%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crab and crab meat imports expanded to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 46% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together held near 53% share of total imports.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crabs and crab meat imports, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+11.5%) and Indonesia (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.6%) and Singapore (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Thailand and Vietnam increased by +31 and +4.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest crab and crab meat importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 73% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +18.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 8.2%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
