The ASEAN marble and travertine crude market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a drastic downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 15%. Over the period under review, crude production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of marble and travertine was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, marble and travertine crude exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the crude exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam represented the key exporter of marble and travertine in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 78% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together comprising a 22% share of total exports.

Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of marble and travertine. Malaysia (-14.8%) and Indonesia (-36.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+68 p.p.) and Malaysia (+5.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Indonesia saw its share reduced by -73.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine crude supplier in ASEAN, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports.

In Vietnam, marble and travertine crude exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-34.0% per year) and Malaysia (-12.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, marble and travertine crude export price increased by +37.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, the amount of marble and travertine imported in ASEAN soared to X tons, increasing by 130% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 449% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of crude imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, marble and travertine crude imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Singapore represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 51% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Indonesia (17%) and Malaysia (4.8%). Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine crude imports into Singapore stood at +17.5%. At the same time, Cambodia (+26.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-13.6%), Indonesia (-18.3%) and Malaysia (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Singapore and Cambodia increased by +48 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine in ASEAN, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 2.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore totaled +35.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (-12.9% per year) and Indonesia (-14.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 296% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded significant growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
