Cucumber And Gherkin Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN cucumber and gherkin market fell modestly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -3.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 75%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Indonesia (X tons) remains the largest cucumber and gherkin producing country in ASEAN, comprising approx. 61% of total volume. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), threefold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Indonesia amounted to -1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (-2.2% per year) and Malaysia (+0.4% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of cucumbers and gherkins in ASEAN fell to X tons per ha, flattening at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 4.2% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cucumber and gherkin harvested area shrank slightly to X ha in 2022, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 3%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

Cucumber and gherkin exports declined to X tons in 2022, reducing by -7% on 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.6% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Malaysia prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), achieving a 5.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cucumber and gherkin exports from Malaysia stood at +2.9%. At the same time, Thailand (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand increased by +3.6 percentage points.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest cucumber and gherkin supplier in ASEAN, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 4.3% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+2.2%).

Imports in ASEAN

Cucumber and gherkin imports contracted dramatically to X tons in 2022, which is down by -15.6% compared with 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Singapore was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 72% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), generating a 26% share of total imports.

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cucumbers and gherkins. Malaysia (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cucumbers and gherkins in ASEAN, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore stood at +2.5%.

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia amounted to $X per ton.
