In 2021, the ASEAN calendering cylinder market decreased by -5.2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, calendering cylinder production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, shipments abroad of cylinders for calendering was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -24.9% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 97%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, calendering cylinder exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -38.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 40% of total exports. Singapore (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X units) and Malaysia (X units). All these countries together took approx. 59% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +21.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest calendering cylinder supplying countries in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +36.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -20.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Malaysia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+12.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Calendering Cylinder Imports
Imports in ASEAN
For the fourth consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in purchases abroad of cylinders for calendering, which decreased by -31% to X units in 2021. In general, imports recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 60%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calendering cylinder imports declined notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Thailand was the key importing country with an import of around X units, which accounted for 50% of total imports. Malaysia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Vietnam (8.8%), Indonesia (8.4%), the Philippines (7.5%) and Singapore (7.2%).
Imports into Thailand decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Philippines (+10.1%) and Vietnam (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +10.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-4.4%), Malaysia (-4.5%) and Singapore (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam and the Philippines increased by +5.7 and +5.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cylinders for calendering in ASEAN, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand stood at -4.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-1.8% per year) and Indonesia (+2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, growing by 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Malaysia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
