Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, denatured ethyl alcohol exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 262%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Singapore represented the major exporter of denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits in ASEAN, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 50% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons), together constituting a 47% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Vietnam ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 92% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Myanmar, which accounted for a further 4.9%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +20.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Vietnam ($X per ton) and Myanmar ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+29.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, denatured ethyl alcohol imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 77% of total imports in 2021. Singapore (X tons) took a 9.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (8.2%) and Malaysia (5.5%).

The Philippines experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits. At the same time, Singapore (+28.0%), Thailand (+8.1%) and Malaysia (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Singapore and Thailand increased by +7.9 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits in ASEAN, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with an 8.8% share.

In the Philippines, denatured ethyl alcohol imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+4.4% per year) and Singapore (+22.5% per year).

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
