Diethanolamine Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN diethanolamine market surged to $X in 2021, rising by 18% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, diethanolamine production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, the amount of diethanolamine and its salts exported in ASEAN rose significantly to X tons, with an increase of 5.2% on 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, diethanolamine exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Malaysia represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 63% of total exports. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Thailand (14%). The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of diethanolamine and its salts. At the same time, the Philippines (+62.6%) and Singapore (+36.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +62.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+18 p.p.), Malaysia (+3.7 p.p.) and the Philippines (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -24.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest diethanolamine supplier in ASEAN, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Malaysia, diethanolamine exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+22.0% per year) and the Philippines (+58.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Diethanolamine Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, the amount of diethanolamine and its salts imported in ASEAN amounted to X tons, surging by 4.1% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, diethanolamine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a mild expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 93%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) represented roughly 69% of total imports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Malaysia (8.7%) and the Philippines (4.8%). Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +31.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest diethanolamine importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 80% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Among the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +13.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
