The ASEAN direct dye market expanded significantly to $X in 2021, rising by 8.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2021, direct dye exports in ASEAN amounted to X tons, surging by 12% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together mixing up 90% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), comprising a 6.2% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest direct dye supplier in ASEAN, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand stood at +3.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+23.0% per year) and Singapore (-16.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of direct dyes and preparations based thereon increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 23%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, direct dye imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons), distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) represented the key importers of direct dyes and preparations based thereon, together achieving 99% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest direct dye importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 76% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +37.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
