The ASEAN dried prune market rose markedly to $X in 2022, surging by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dried prune production rose notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, dried prune exports in ASEAN fell to X tons, shrinking by -10.3% on the year before. In general, exports showed a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 67%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) was the key exporter of dried prunes, generating 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together generating a 51% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried prunes exports, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012 to 2022. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Singapore (-6.1%), Myanmar (-8.6%) and Thailand (-16.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam and Malaysia increased by +35 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest dried prune supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 95% of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +14.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 63% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, the amount of dried prunes imported in ASEAN expanded rapidly to X tons, increasing by 13% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune imports expanded to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 58% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Singapore (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took near 37% share of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+23.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-3.3%), Malaysia (-4.6%) and Thailand (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+14 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -4% and -8.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 84% of total imports. Thailand and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, declining by -8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
