In 2021, the ASEAN dry-cleaning machine market decreased by less than 0.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. In 2021, the amount of dry-cleaning machines exported in ASEAN shrank slightly to X units, waning by -4% compared with the year before. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry-cleaning machine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a precipitous contraction. Thailand was the largest exporter of dry-cleaning machines in ASEAN, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was near 63% of total exports in 2021. Singapore (X units) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (8.7%).

Exports from Thailand decreased at an average annual rate of -27.4% from 2012 to 2021. The Philippines (-3.3%) and Singapore (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+20 p.p.) and the Philippines (+7.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -30.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 72% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Singapore, with a CAGR of -6.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, rising by 22% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, faced a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 108%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X units of dry-cleaning machines were imported in ASEAN; dropping by -93.3% against 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 281%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry-cleaning machine imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports faced a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 156% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines was the key importer of dry-cleaning machines in ASEAN, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was near 46% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X units), Vietnam (X units), Cambodia (X units) and Malaysia (X units), together achieving a 44% share of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X units) and Thailand (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into the Philippines decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+27.7%) and Cambodia (+15.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +27.7% from 2012-2021. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (-7.3%), Singapore (-16.9%) and Malaysia (-23.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+29 p.p.), Cambodia (+7.2 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+3.5 p.p.), Vietnam (+3.3 p.p.) and Thailand (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-14 p.p.) and Malaysia (-16.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest dry-cleaning machine importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and the Philippines ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +3.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 1,405% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a deep downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
