Market Size for Duck and Goose Meat in ASEAN

The ASEAN duck and goose meat market totaled $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Duck and Goose Meat in ASEAN

In value terms, duck and goose meat production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Vietnam (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of duck and goose meat production, accounting for 39% of total volume. Moreover, duck and goose meat production in Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malaysia (X tons), threefold. Myanmar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.

In Vietnam, duck and goose meat production increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Malaysia (-7.4% per year) and Myanmar (-6.3% per year).

In 2022, the average duck and goose meat yield in ASEAN contracted sharply to X kg per head, dropping by -19.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the duck and goose meat yield attained the maximum level at X kg per head in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for duck and goose meat production in ASEAN skyrocketed to X heads, growing by 24% on 2021 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

Exports of Duck and Goose Meat

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, exports of duck and goose meat in ASEAN stood at X tons, with an increase of 14% on 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, duck and goose meat exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Thailand represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), achieving a 23% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to duck and goose meat exports from Thailand stood at +11.8%. At the same time, Singapore (+23.2%), Vietnam (+21.3%) and Malaysia (+20.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012-2022. Malaysia (+9.5 p.p.) and Singapore (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -12.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest duck and goose meat supplier in ASEAN, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 4.1% share.

In Thailand, duck and goose meat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+25.6% per year) and Singapore (+16.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 55% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Duck and Goose Meat

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, duck and goose meat imports in ASEAN dropped to X tons, declining by -2.7% against 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 115%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, duck and goose meat imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +13.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Singapore represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 42% of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) took a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (12%) and Myanmar (5.7%). Malaysia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +92.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported duck and goose meat in ASEAN, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore totaled +12.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+22.3% per year) and Cambodia (+31.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
