Eggplant Production in ASEAN

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 71%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Indonesia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of eggplant production, accounting for 70% of total volume. Moreover, eggplant production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Philippines (X tons), threefold.
In Indonesia, eggplant production increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Philippines (+1.4% per year) and Thailand (-1.6% per year).
The average eggplant yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the eggplant yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of eggplants (aubergines) were harvested in ASEAN; which is down by -2.4% compared with the year before. In general, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 5% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, eggplant exports in ASEAN fell modestly to X tons, reducing by -4.1% on 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, eggplant exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +79.5% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Malaysia prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), achieving a 5.6% share of total exports. The following exporters - Thailand (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - together made up 9.5% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant exports from Malaysia stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Thailand (+36.5%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+18.7%) and Vietnam (+16.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-15.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Malaysia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Thailand increased by +7.5, +4.4 and +4.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in ASEAN, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 4.9% share.
In Malaysia, eggplant exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+23.3% per year) and Indonesia (-16.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, the amount of eggplants (aubergines) imported in ASEAN dropped to X tons, which is down by -7% on the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, eggplant imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Singapore was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 76% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Brunei Darussalam (10%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant imports into Singapore stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+23.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brunei Darussalam (+8.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported eggplants (aubergines) in ASEAN, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 4.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore totaled +5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (-8.7% per year) and Brunei Darussalam (+15.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
