Envelope Market Size in ASEAN
In 2021, the ASEAN envelope market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the market value increased by 5.9% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Envelope Production in ASEAN
In value terms, envelope production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Envelope Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of envelopes exported in ASEAN shrank to X tons, with a decrease of -8.4% against the previous year. In general, exports saw a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 17%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, envelope exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) represented the major exporter of envelopes in ASEAN, creating 79% of total export. Thailand (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (8.8%). Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +53.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +45.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Envelope Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of envelopes imported in ASEAN soared to X tons, picking up by 17% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 30%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, envelope imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Singapore (X tons) was the main importer of envelopes, making up 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together generating a 39% share of total imports. Thailand (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+23.5%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+22.8%), the Philippines (+11.0%), Malaysia (+10.5%) and Cambodia (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+7.6 p.p.), the Philippines (+6 p.p.), Malaysia (+5.6 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-3.8 p.p.) and Singapore (-9.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported envelopes in ASEAN, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 13% share.
In Singapore, envelope imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Philippines (+14.8% per year) and Vietnam (+29.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
