Expanded Clays Market Size in ASEAN
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the ASEAN expanded clays market, when its value increased by 3.6% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Expanded Clays Production in ASEAN
In value terms, expanded clays production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, expanded clays exports in ASEAN reduced dramatically to X tons, which is down by -51.3% against 2020. Overall, exports faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 66%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, expanded clays exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Malaysia represented the major exporter of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Indonesia (12%), Singapore (7.9%) and the Philippines (7.4%).
Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+38.0%) and Singapore (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +38.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Philippines (-13.6%) and Indonesia (-30.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+49 p.p.), Thailand (+15 p.p.) and Singapore (+6.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Indonesia (-70.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest expanded clays supplier in ASEAN, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia amounted to +5.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+11.3% per year) and Thailand (+24.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 43% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 125%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, purchases abroad of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, imports showed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 126%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, expanded clays imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 105%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Singapore (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented roughly 60% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together constituting a 38% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest expanded clays importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 68% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +16.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
