The ASEAN flat glass market dropped to $X in 2021, waning by -9.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, flat glass production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of flat glass exported in ASEAN soared to X tons, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, flat glass exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight decline. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Thailand (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) was the major exporter of flat glass in ASEAN, generating 83% of total export. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), comprising a 16% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest flat glass supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +12.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Flat Glass Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, purchases abroad of flat glass decreased by -2.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -35.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 53%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, flat glass imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) represented the major importer of flat glass, achieving 40% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (14%), Indonesia (6.7%), Cambodia (6.2%) and Thailand (5%). Myanmar (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of flat glass. At the same time, the Philippines (+16.1%), Cambodia (+14.2%), Indonesia (+6.7%) and Vietnam (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2021. Myanmar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+12 p.p.), Cambodia (+3.9 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-6.5 p.p.) and Malaysia (-6.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total imports. The Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +17.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
