The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, folding boxboard exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Indonesia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together reaching 89% of total export. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), constituting a 6.7% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +23.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest folding boxboard supplier in ASEAN, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore amounted to -2.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+7.4% per year) and Thailand (+10.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ASEAN
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of folding boxboard increased by 9.9% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, folding boxboard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) represented the key importer of folding boxboard, creating 36% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (16%), the Philippines (9.2%), Indonesia (9.2%) and Singapore (7.5%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest folding boxboard importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports. Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Singapore, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
