Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Vietnam (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), with a combined 90% share of total production. Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +7.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in ASEAN

Fresh pork carcase exports soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 21% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 171% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 236%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), committing a 6.6% share of total exports.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat exports, with a CAGR of +56.8% from 2012 to 2022. Malaysia (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+91 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -48.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest fresh pork carcase supplier in ASEAN, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand amounted to +58.6%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, fresh pork carcase export price increased by +43.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+1.1%).

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, the amount of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat imported in ASEAN contracted notably to X tons, with a decrease of -38.6% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 29%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Singapore prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2022. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+72.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +72.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+3.8 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -3.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In Singapore, fresh pork carcase imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+69.2% per year) and Vietnam (-12.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -6% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (-1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
