Frozen crab and crab meat exports contracted slightly to X tons in 2021, waning by -4.6% against the year before. Overall, exports showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, frozen crab and crab meat exports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 47%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Myanmar was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 47% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (12%), Indonesia (11%) and Malaysia (7.8%).
Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen crabs and crabs meat exports, with a CAGR of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021. Malaysia and Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Vietnam (-7.9%) and Indonesia (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia increased by +17, +5.3 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest frozen crab and crab meat supplier in ASEAN, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Myanmar was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+1.7% per year) and Vietnam (-7.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 22%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, supplies from abroad of frozen crabs and crabs meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 65%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, frozen crab and crab meat imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +21.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 87% share of total imports.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +12.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
